"Shchedryk (bountiful) is a Ukrainian shchedrivka, or New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow. Based on a traditional folk chant whose language was thought to have magical properties, the song tells the story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of the wealth and happiness that will come with the spring. The song is better known as Carol of the Bells through its adaptation by Peter Wilhousky in 1921." - Sadie Harrison
