Description

Soliloquy was composed for and dedicated to my dear friend and collaborator Dr. David Earll. The composition is structured in three sections / movements, each exploring tuba’s rich timbral and expressive palette in a different way. The first section focuses on the more dramatic qualities of the instrument, and strikes a reflective, sorrowful tone, often using singing / multiphonics to articulate various phrase climaxes. The second section is developed using a rhythmical transcription of Morse code for the name “David”. The detached material presented at the beginning is then developed using various types of articulated air sounds and glissandi. The last section delivers a very fast and virtuosic narrative, mostly focusing on different grouping of scalelike material in different registers, to keep a perpetual ascending motion. The piece can be performed with a short break between the three movements or played without a pause.
