I Radiate is written for and dedicated to marimba virtuosa Ria Ideta. The piece was inspired and structured both by her artistry, and her background. In fact, the title of the composition itself is an exact anagram of her name. Ria is originally from Japan, the land of the rising sun (Nippon / Nihon), therefore my discovery of this anagram seemed very fitting in this sense as well to describe the entire piece. This can help explain the quasi-Japanese pentatonic scale aroma in some parts of the piece, especially in the latter part of the composition, where I use this pattern as the central axis to construct fast scale like passages.
The connection to Ria does not stop there, since I translate her first and last name into a Morse Code ostinato pattern that dominates the piece in one form or another, and it is structurally used as one of the main building blocks for the entire composition.
The work is structured in two movements, performed without interruption, or with a very small break
for stick changes, if needed. It is conceivable that each movement could also be performed independently.
